The Car History of Alex Beloff III

I BOUGHT THIS 1958 CADILLAC 62 SERIES SHORT DECK (QUARTER PANEL IS SHORTER TO APPEAL TO THOSE WHO THINK THE CADILLAC IS TOO LONG).  IT WAS A PRETTY NEAT CAR AND I LOVED DRIVING IT.  GAVE IT THE BELOFF TOUCH AND RENDERED IT MECHANICALLY SOUND FOR THE ROAD.  SEE THOSE NICE CHROME BUMPER EXHAUSTS?  IN 1958 WE RAN THE EXHAUST PIPES DOWN ON THE STREET INSTEAD OF THROUGH THE BUMPERS.  DIDN’T LOOK AS COOL AS THE 1957.  WHEN IT WAS COLD OUTSIDE AND THE EXHAUST VAPORS LOOKING LIKE SMOKE WOULD BELLOW OUT THE CHROME BUMPER EXHAUSTS ESPECIALLY AT IDLE.  THAT ALSO DESTROYED THE CHROMED BUMPER EXHAUSTS.

I ADVERTISED IT NATIONALLY AND A GUY FROM CHICAGO WHO OWNED A NEIGHBORHOOD TAVERN WANTED THE CAR, RODE THE BUS, AND I PICKED HIM UP AT THE BUS STATION.  TOOK HIM TO MY HOUSE AND HE LOVED THE CAR.  HE HIT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO SET THE CHOKE, TURNED THE KEY AND IT POPPED RIGHT OFF AND RAN GREAT.  HE DROVE IT BACK TO CHICAGO FROM RICHMOND AND I CALLED TO SEE IF HE GOT HOME SAFELY.  HE SAID, YES EXCEPT SOMETHING HAPPENED TO THE FUEL GAUGE ON THE DASH.  IT WASN’T READING CORRECTLY, AND I RAN OUT OF GAS.  I GOT MAD, DROPPED MY THERMOS OF HOT COFFEE AND IT BROKE INSIDE.  I FELT BADLY FOR HIM AND HE SAID, NO IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT.  I SENT HIM A CHECK FOR $100 AND HE SAID, PLEASE IF YOU ARE EVER NEAR CHICAGO, STOP BY MY TAVERN FOR A LIBATION.  I WISHED I HAD.
